Matrix interface guide

Matrix

Use Overseer with Matrix if you prefer open chat infrastructure or self-hosted messaging.

Matrix is a good fit for privacy-focused teams and communities that already run Matrix rooms.

What Matrix supports

  • room-based conversations
  • per-interface homeserver and access token configuration
  • optional room filtering
  • the same core agent, tools, skills, and MCP integrations as the main app

What you need

To configure Matrix in Overseer, you usually need:

  • your homeserver URL
  • a Matrix access token
  • optional room IDs if you only want specific rooms enabled

Setup Flow

Create or choose a Matrix account

Use an account that Overseer can connect with on your Matrix homeserver.

Collect the connection details

You will need the homeserver URL and an access token for that account.

Add the Matrix interface in Overseer

In Settings → Interfaces, choose Matrix and fill in the homeserver and token values.

Limit rooms if needed

If you only want certain rooms, add those room IDs in the interface configuration.

Good to know

  • Matrix can auto-join invited rooms depending on your setup.
  • If no room IDs are provided, Overseer can work more broadly across connected rooms.
  • For first-time users, Telegram or the web dashboard may be easier to start with, but Matrix is excellent for self-hosted chat workflows.
